my diary

Wimbledon Diary
Walking through those gates for the first time at the All England Lawn Tennis Club is something I will never forget. The Green and Purple colours, the absence of sponsors signs, the queues that stretch for miles of people waiting to buy tickets, strawberries and cream. All of which I have seen on the television, but experiencing it at first hand was a truly humbling experience.
For anyone out there who has ever qualified at a slam or any other big tournament for that matter, the best part about it for me was that 60 minute shower after your match where you just stand there and can't wipe that smile off your face. It was now time to get down to business. My first round opponent was Ivo Heuberger, another well conditioned grass courter. Toughy. After some coaching tips from John Fitzgerald (Davis Cup Coach, Australia), I went into the match quietly confident about my chances. This was translated into the biggest win of my career in four tight sets. Beauty. The media circus following following my win was something quite new to me but something that I very much enjoyed. Cameras and journalists all wanting to get a glimpse into my little world. My second round opponent was Mr Ivo Karlovic, The tallest bloke I have ever seen. I was at eye level with his belly button. Big Bastard. Unfortunately, I lost a tight match in four sets. I felt like I played my best match of the championships that day. It really could have gone either way. Only one or two points made the difference. I guess he just served too good under pressure. Well played mate. Having now had a little time to reflect on my experience at Wimbledon, it is something I will take with me to the grave. At the same time, the experience has given me the belief that I can mix it with the best players in the world and has made me even hungrier to be part of the tennis elite. I very much look forward to the challenges that lie ahead. Thanks for reading and I look forward to everyone following my progress at the US Open in August where heads are sure to roll. Take it easy. Bucks.
