He began playing at the age of six with his father Santiago, who works in the administrative department of a company. His mother, Felia, is a housewife and his sister, Elana, is a physiotherapist. Santiago likes soccer and he supports the Barcelona team. His favorite music group is Nirvana and his favorite movie is Pearl Harbor. He enjoys skiing and surfing the net. His tennis idols are Boris Becker and Juan Carlos Ferrero. Santiago prefers to play on clay and considers his backhand to be his best shot. His most memorable experience was winning the Casablanca title over Hrbaty after qualifying into main draw.
